DISCRIMINAION IN BULGARIA HIGHER THAN IN USA IN THE 60s
“The discriminaion is a prevailing phenomenon in Bulgaria - 28 percent of the citizens feel as a victim of intolerant attitude” – stated the “Rock” agency report from September. "As far as we know, even during the culmination moments around the Martin Luther King’s murder and the student's rebellions that have ensued in the end of 60s, the discrimination measurements against the Afro americans in USA have not had such high values”, says the head of the agency, Tsvetozar Tomov.
“The percent of the people that feel in not equal ethnic cultural condition is highest in Bulgaria – 68%. Also, for the first time we measure a very high percent of people that feel discriminated in private property aspect – 23%. By this indication the values tie with discriminations by age and physical disabiliies, respectively 30 and 25 percent. It is very impressive that the Turks show a greater tolerance towards the Bulgarians than towards the Roma. 2/3 of them would accept becoming relatives with Bulgarians, and only 18.7 percent - with Roma. There is a heavy social distance between Turks and Roma, as the second strive towards bulgarization”, says Mr. Tomov.
